Abstract:

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes and, besides being amongst the most luminous sources of radiation in the Universe, are also widely believed to play an important role in the evolution of their host galaxies. X-ray emission is produced in the inner regions of these accreting systems, and therefore can provide fundamental information on the structure and evolution of the material surrounding the supermassive black hole, as well as of the accretion flow.

In my talk I will review our current understanding of AGN, and of some of the most important features observed in the X-rays. I will also discuss the importance of hard X-ray selected samples, and what we can learn from studying the properties of the obscuring material around supermassive black holes.
